ABOUT THE LOCATION
Bairro Alto has many faces. In this area, one reveals itself as night falls, more discreet, more intimate, and deeply connected to fado.

Some of Lisbon’s most traditional houses keep alive a night made of discreet doors, soft voices, and music that is heard from within.

A Bairro Alto where the night moves to another rhythm and is not to be confused with the bustle of the bar streets.

ABOUT THE HISTORY
But this street had many lives before it had a newspaper.

For centuries, it was Rua dos Calafates, linked to the men who worked in maritime trades. Then came the printing houses, the newspapers, the journalists, the writers, and the paperboys.

It was here that, in 1864, Diário de Notícias was born, founded by Eduardo Coelho and Tomás Quintino Antunes. The newspaper remained in this area for about 75 years before moving to Avenida da Liberdade. In 1885, the street received the name it still bears today.

The newspaper left. The name remained. And the street continued to gather stories.

And then there are the mysteries the street holds, among tales of Freemasonry, underground passages, and other things that perhaps are better left to be discovered.

ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF THE PLACE
There is something particularly Lisbon about this part of Bairro Alto.

A building in the heart of the city, where history, culture, fado, and everyday life coexist at the doorstep.
