ABOUT THE HISTORY
There are places in Lisbon where history is not only read in books; it is lived around the corner.

On the night of September 3, 1758, King José I was returning discreetly from Belém to Ajuda in a simple carriage, without the royal guard, after an intimate meeting with his mistress, D. Teresa de Távora, the so-called Marquesa Nova.

Whoever planned the attack knew this routine in detail. It was precisely in this area of today’s Calçada do Galvão that the carriage was ambushed and fired upon, in an event that would trigger one of the most dramatic episodes in Portuguese political history, the Távora Affair.

The king survived and, a few meters from the attack site, stands the Church of Memory, officially the Church of Our Lady of Deliverance and Saint Joseph, commissioned by King José I himself as a vow of gratitude for having escaped with his life.

But the impact of that night extended through time. The investigation led by the Marquess of Pombal culminated in the conviction and execution of the Távora family and the Duke of Aveiro in Belém, in January 1759.

Decades later, during the reign of Queen Maria I, the Távora family would be rehabilitated, and the controversy over the true extent of the conspiracy remains to this day.

As punishment, the Duke of Aveiro’s assets were confiscated and his palace in Belém was completely demolished. The land was salted, and the Padrão do Chão Salgado was erected there, a memory that lives on in the current Beco do Chão Salgado, located just minutes from this apartment.

In a final and fascinating irony of fate, the Marquess of Pombal himself, who conducted the entire process, is now buried in the Church of Memory, sealing the historical cycle of this place in a truly unique way.
